Daycare Association Rölli (Päiväkotiyhdistys Rölli ry) provides private early childhood and pre-primary education services in Mikkeli, Finland. The association began its activities in January 1991, and since its establishment, the City of Mikkeli has supported our work as one of the alternatives within early childhood education services. The association is operating in three separate units.
Education and teaching are provided by a professional and qualified staff, including early childhood education teachers, a special education teacher, and childcare workers. In addition, Rölli has kitchen staff and a cleaner, who ensure tasty meals and the cleanliness of the facilities.
Rölli’s activities follow the Finnish curriculum for early childhood education and care (ECEC), as well as the ECEC plan of the City of Mikkeli and the curriculum for pre-primary education. Participation, equality, and equity are strongly emphasized in the implementation of activities. Every child has the right to general, intensified, or special support, as stipulated in the ECEC Act.
Our goal at Rölli is to support families in their upbringing by providing children with high-quality care and nurturing guidance, while promoting their overall development and opportunities for learning. In our work, we value every child’s individual development at their own pace, emphasizing the child’s natural curiosity and intrinsic motivation to explore new things. By living, acting and experiencing together, we learn the skills and understanding that children need in life.
Cultural diversity
In Rölli, languages, cultures, and worldviews are integrated as part of early childhood education as a whole. In discussion with the child’s guardians, everyday practices and routines related to these matters are agreed upon in a way that respects the family’s worldview.
The diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds that are present in Rölli are acknowledged through theme days and/or weeks. Cultural diversity is explored through songs, pictures, and books, for example. The religions and other worldviews represented within the child group are explored, including also non-religious perspectives and broader questions about life.
Children are introduced to traditions related to Finnish culture and annual celebrations. The teaching of Finnish as a Second Language (S2) is integrated into daily activities, supported by the use of visual aids and sign-supported communication when needed (we use the KieliPeda tool).
Sustainable development
Responsible attitudes toward nature and the environment are demonstrated through everyday choices and actions. In Rölli, the shared use of materials and facilities, moderation, repairing, and recycling are actively promoted. We have our own Sustainable Development Programme, overseen by a staff working group that changes annually. When exploring biodiversity and the wonders of nature, the nearby forest and surrounding environment of the daycare provide rich opportunities for new learning.
